Crayola Paint 'n Play Pony (1998)

UPDATE: As of July 28th, 2018, we finally have a video of Paint 'n Play Pony! Here's the link: https://youtu.be/D1SZ_5e0I5s
Thanks to dosdaysareover for uploading this!

Hello and welcome to the first entry of Suddenly Disappeared. Where i cover CD-ROM games for Windows 95/98 that not many people know about. And insert screenshots i captured of the game.

For this first entry. We'll be checking out a game that somewhat stands out from other Crayola PC games. Because nobody even captures footage from this game. And this game is called: Crayola Paint 'n Play Pony!

Now. If you're a 90's pony lover. Then you probably knew about Friendship Gardens. A game based on the My Little Pony franchise released in. Surprisingly. The same year as this game. But there are a couple differences: In Friendship Gardens, you created a pony AND take care of her. But in Paint 'n Play Pony. You only create a pony or a unicorn. And you can write stories about her. Amazing, Right?

Even though it looks like a pretty cool game. There's little to no footage of this game at all. There are some old reviews online. But nothing comes close as a YouTube vĂdeo or even an article about this game. So, I'm here to do an article.

Enough talking. Let's get going!

When you insert the CD (I'm using a VM to do all this by the way),
You'll be greeted with this launcher. It has five options:

1st - Play: Play the game.
2nd - Demos: Install and play demos of Crayola games.
3rd - Try & Buy: Yet another demo. This time of Crayola Magic Wardrobe.
4th - Fun and Learning Guide: A guide intended for parents and teachers about some ideas to try in the game.
5th - Exit: Exit the launcher.

We'll choose the Play option.

The game starts with the IBM and Crayola logos (Couldn't take pictures of the two). And this screen. There's also some really catchy music but sadly, I couldn't rip the song because of the file name.

You'll be greeted by Penelope Pig, A talking pig who loves ponies, horses and unicorns. She has a yellow picnic blanket that has many activities you can choose and i'll be showing off these in a moment.

And i gotta mention. These horses in the background are so adorable.

Anyway, I chose a Palomino pony because i like it.

Here we are at the pony customizing screen. There are so many options to choose from and we'll be taking a look at them one by one.

This is the Hair Care Box. Where you can customize your pony's mane and tail. There are so many options that i've included screenshots of every single one.

First are the hair colors, And here are the colors you can choose:

Star White.

Palomino.

Sky Blue.

Lavender.

Tickle Me Pink.

Silver.

Rainbow.

Chocolate.

Midnight Black

And Chestnut.

I chose Rainbow because it's so colorful.

There's scissors! You can cut your pony's hair. It's self-explanatory.

And there's a comb that can grow the cut hair again.

There's also three hairstyles to make on your pony:

French Braids.

Long Braid.

And probably the most beautiful mixture of all: Long French Braids.

For the French Braids, There are hairlights and their colors will be said now:

- Mauvelous (Pink)
- Cornflower (Blue)
- Teal (Green)
- Wisteria (Purple)
- Orange
- Red

Here are the Screenshots.

There is also a brush that you can brush the pony's hair with. Be careful though. If you did a hairstyle in your pony's hair, It will undo the style.

And our Grand Finale for the hair options is Glitter. You can put glitter in your pony so that she can shine!

Here are the night blankets. So your pony can keep being warm at cold nights. There are different night blankets to choose from.

Isn't she beautiful?

After you made your pony cozy-cozy, You can put some beautiful saddles on the pony.

Look at my pony's brown and pink saddle. It's charming.

The Bridles have a bigger selection than the Night Blankets or the saddles themselves!

Really good bridle i have there.

The saddle blanket selection gets to be bigger than any of the other options here.

Here is the selection of face markings and hoof markings.

If you want to go beyond decorating your pony, You can change her coat color.

There are so many accessories to put on your pony! Geez, I regret what i said about the saddle blanket collection. From medals and hats to necklaces and legwarmers, You can put whatever you want on your pony.

You can put animal friends to keep your pony some company. Such as a butterfly, A turtle and a cat.

I couldn't rip the music of the title screen and i couldn't rip the sound effects either. But these sounds are just regular horse neighs and nickers.

The backgrounds play music when you click on them and they won't stop until you select blank.

You can put pretty borders to show off your pony with style.

Your pony is not alone! If you want to make your pony a momma, You can put cute little foal ponies.

Now it's the time to show off the only Crayola thing you can do here. You can draw in your pony. And there are 48 crayon colors, A crayon sharpener, A fill bucket, A blue blanket you can click if you make a mistake, An eraser and a button to start the painting all over. You can draw in her coat, Her accessories and even the border if you chose one.

Here are the colors:

You can't have a pony without a name! You can name your pony using these names or you can type your own.

When you exit the customization area, Penelope asks if you want to save your Picture, If you press "Yes", It will take a picure of your pony and it will appear in the Pony Gallery, If you press "No", It will take you to the place you clicked before Penelope prompted you. Keep in mind that if you press "No" you will lose your pony, So make sure you save first.

The Pony Gallery is where you view your pictures of the ponies you made.

If you mouse over one of your pictures, There are four options:

- Write a story about the pony you made.
- Print the Picture.
- Export the Picture to your computer so that you can send over to anyone.
- Delete the Picture, This is a permanent option.

This is The Horse Heroes Scrapbook, Penelope's scrapbook that is all about celebrity horses. If you click on one of these articles, It will show you what looks like horse history.

There is also a magazine in Penelope's picnic blanket. When you click on the magazine, It will show you some fun horse facts. I took screenshots of all the facts and i will show them right now.

On to other things...

This is the Pony Story Maker! You can access it through the Gallery. You can check out Penelope's story or you can create your own.

Here's Penelope's Story. The story's pony varies depending on the pony you chose.

And here's YOUR story! Yes. Your story. Well, Technically, Your pony's story that YOU will create. You can name it and insert your name as well on the left (Which neither i did) and you can write a story on the right.

Also. One little thing to mention in the Pony Customization Area: If you choose an Unicorn. You can change the color of her wings.

They are nice.

On to the Stable! In the Stable, You need to take care of a pony named Moonbeam and make her feel better with medicine, Decorate her hair, Give her food and water, Etc.

You can also change Moonbeam's age and color.

Now. There are a lot of things you need to do with Moonbeam. So the number of screenshots will be higher than you'd expect.

So...Many...Screenshots...

Here you can print medals, Certificates and Diary pages. But i don't have a printer hooked, Besides, I'm on a laptop!

When you click on "Exit" Penelope will ask if you really want to exit. If you press "Yes" It will quit the game. If you press "No", You can continue playing. You can go to the credits but afterwards it will exit to the Desktop anyway.

The "Hyperspace Cowgirls" screen will appear right after you click "Yes" on the exit prompt or after you click "Next" on the credits.

And to wrap this up, Just a quick warning:

You need to have your computer be in 256 Color Mode. If not, When you boot the game. You'll be greeted with this screen:

You can still play the game without 256 Color Mode. But that is a requirement.

And that's it! Let me know down below what CD ROM game i can check out. See ya!
